Vienna Daughters' Day 2025

Girls aged up to 14 explore the world of data science and geography

This year, our Research Network Data Science @ Uni Vienna took part in the Vienna Daughters' Day for the very first time. Together with the Department of Geography and Regional Research, we welcomed schoolgirls aged up to 14 years to an inspiring day dedicated to science and academic life.

The programme began with breakfast and a lively conversation with university professors from the fields of data mining, machine learning, statistics, visual analytics and geography. The girls learned about the paths that lead to a career in academia and what the everyday work of a university professor entails.

Two hands-on workshops introduced the participants to the role of data in geography and visual analytics. At the Department of Geography and Regional Research, the young visitors explored how cartographic data is used to understand our planet. Back at our base in Kolingasse, the final session gave insights into how patterns and connections can be detected in large datasets through visualisation.

We thank all participants for their interest and curiosity – and we hope to see many of them again at future events!
